As there are times when we need to introduce young talent to the national teams, PCB also tried it for this particular series against Afghanistan. Usually, for the fans, it is disheartening to watch their country’s team suffer an awful defeat. Whether it’s a nail-biting loss in the final moments or a lopsided blowout, the disappointment can linger for time to come. However, there are reasons to believe that defeat is not as shocking as it could be. Because Shadab-led Pakistan went into the game with young talent against a tough rival on Sharjah’s tricky pitch.

Certainly, a remarkable moment for the Afghans as they defeated Pakistan for the first time in any cricket series. Beating Pakistan is a dream come true for the Afghan cricket board and surely has an impact on international perception, besides our internal experiences of introducing young talent.

In this article, I am presenting a smart way of integrating young talent into teams. You’ll need to follow these six critical steps that I’ve outlined below. Each of these steps plays an important role in the integration of inexperienced players into the team and can significantly impact the outcome of your efforts.

In analyzing the factors contributing to our country’s recent defeat in the cricket series, two key points emerged. Firstly, the team was selected with a majority of young and inexperienced players who had not yet been exposed to international competitions. Secondly, these young players had performed well in franchise matches but were not yet adequately prepared for the challenges of high-level international competitions. While young talent is critical for the future of sports in our country and vital for developing future talent, it is crucial that we prepare them adequately for international competitions. In this article, I am outlining a strategy for integrating young players into the team in a way that ensures they are fully prepared for high-level international competitions.

2. Acknowledgment of Young Player’s Talent

We need to acknowledge that talented and potential players emerge from their performances in leagues and franchise competitions. It is necessary to evaluate every player who has shown potential at the franchise level in the international platform. To evaluate their performance at the international level, the very simple idea is to select them and allow them to play in several international games. However, Selecting an entire team of young and inexperienced players against a tough opponent can be a risky strategy. While young players may have potential and talent, they may not have the experience or mental toughness to perform consistently at the highest level of competition. This is because International competitions often come with a unique set of pressures and challenges that differ from those encountered in domestic or local competitions. 

3. International games bring different pressure

Before we introduce young talent to the national teams, we have to understand that the international game hits differently and brings a different kind of pressure, for young players in their career’s initial stage this can be even more pressure competition. There are several factors involved which make international competition, a way more pressured as compared to franchise and domestic level competitions. Some of those factors include, the stakes being high in international sports games, the fear of failure is also high when stakes are high, performance in international games also affects the player’s reputation and legacy, and representing your country at the international level can also create more pressure.

Young players who excel at the franchise level must be given due consideration, but they must also be prepared for the unique challenges posed by international competitions. Now we will discuss a comprehensive strategy to prepare young talent for international competitions and optimize their performance on the field.

4. Preparation of Young Players for Int’l Competitions

Before we start evaluating the potential of youngsters at the int’l level, first of all, they needed to be prepared for international competitions. Here we have to attain two goals, introduce young talent to the national teams as well as prepare them for international high-stakes competitions. We can prepare young players for international competitions in a smart way where we integrate them into the team alongside senior and experienced players and by creating a Psychologically solid team structure. This solid structure can help them learn from experienced players and develop their skills more quickly. While young players have potential and talent, selecting an entire team of inexperienced players against a tough opponent can be risky. A smart integration will provide an opportunity to perform alongside experienced players and it can be a confidence booster in several ways.  

Rather than selecting an entirely new team of young players, it may be more beneficial to select a combination of both senior and new players. Using this approach, we can create a Psychologically Solid Team Structure which is a key to balancing the team’s performance, as well as provide opportunities for younger players to learn from their more experienced counterparts.

5. How to build a Psychologically Solid Team Structure

Instead of selecting all young batters for an international game against a tough rival as the selection committee did in recent series against Afghanistan, I, propose to create a potential team structure, shall be known as a Psychologically Solid Team, that can be used to integrate young and senior players into a cricket team. One way to structure a Psychologically Solid team is to have a senior player open the batting, followed by two younger players in the second and third positions. The fourth spot could be reserved for another senior player, followed by a young player in the fifth position and another senior player in the sixth position. This arrangement can help to create a strong combination of experience and talent, as well as provide opportunities for younger players to learn from their senior teammates.

In this psychologically solid team structure, the batting lineup is arranged in such a way that there is a balance of experience and young talent throughout. The first position in the batting lineup is occupied by a senior player, who can provide a solid foundation for the team’s innings. This is followed by two younger players in the second and third positions, who can gain valuable experience and exposure to high-level competition by playing alongside a senior player. The fourth position in the batting lineup is then reserved for another senior player, who can provide stability and experience in the middle of the innings. Followed by a young player in the fifth position, who can benefit from the guidance and support of the senior players around them. Finally, the sixth position is occupied by another senior player, to provide a strong backup to the team’s batting side at crucial moments.

6. Benefits of a Psychologically Solid Team Structure

This arrangement has several potential benefits. Firstly, it allows the selection committee to introduce and evaluate young talent at the international level, it also allows young players to gain experience and develop their skills in a supportive and structured environment. Secondly, it ensures that the team has a good balance of experience and talent throughout the batting lineup, which can help to improve overall performance. As experienced players have likely been in similar situations many times before and have developed the mental toughness needed to handle high-pressure similar situations they can mentor and guide younger players, which can foster a positive team culture and encourage the development of future talent.

Selecting a combination of both senior and new players can help to balance the team’s performance and provide opportunities for young players to learn from experienced teammates.

7. The presence of Senior Players can be beneficial

The presence of senior and experienced players on the field can encourage and support new players to feel more prepared and comfortable going into the game. With an experienced player on the pitch, young players can learn to manage their nerves in the initial stage of their career, maintain pressure, and gain real-time experience of how experienced players handle tough opponents. Additionally, it provides young players with opportunities to learn the art of immediate decision-making, playing techniques, and positioning.

It has been proven in several situations that even experienced players can struggle to perform under pressure. Psychological peace is crucial for enhancing an athlete’s performance, as it boosts their self-confidence and enables them to control their nerves on the field, leading to better decision-making and performance. The presence of an experienced batter on the other end can relieve stress for young players. Selecting a couple of experienced players along with youngsters is helpful not only for creating a positive team composition and dynamics but can also influence opponents’ perceptions and put immense game pressure on them.

Senior players may be able to read the game better and they can anticipate the moves of their opponents. This can eventually make it difficult for the opposing team to find ways to break through the experienced player’s defense or get past their offense.

They have to strike a balance between experience and youth by maintaining a psychologically solid team structure. So the team can benefit from the best of both worlds.
